"Since we have gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us exercise them: if prophecy, in proportion to the faith; if ministry, in ministering; if one is a teacher, in teaching; if one exhorts, in exhortation; if one contributes, in generosity; if one is over others, with diligence; if one does acts of mercy, with cheerfulness."
-- Romans 12,6-8, New American Bible.

"Learning is not attained by chance, it must be sought for with ardor and attended to with diligence."
-- Abigail Adams, Letter to John Quincy Adams (May 8, 1780).

"Years ago my mother used to say to me, she'd say, 'In this world, Elwood, you must be' - she always called me Elwood - 'In this world, Elwood, you must be oh so smart or oh so pleasant.' Well, for years I was smart. I recommend pleasant. You may quote me."
-- James Stewart, perf. Harvey. Dir. Henry Koster. Writ. Mary Chase and Oscar Brodney. Universal - International, (1950).

"I am born self-centered. And this is original sin"
-- Thomas Merton, New Seeds of Contemplation (1961).

"You don't need a weather man to know which way the wind blows."
-- Bob Dylan, 'Subterranean Homesick Blues', (1965).

"'An SEP,' he said, 'is something that we can't see, or don't see, or our brain doesn't let us see, because we think that it's somebody else's problem. That's what SEP means. Somebody Else's Problem. The brain just edits it out, it's like a blind spot. If you look at it directly you won't see it unless you know precisely what it is. Your only hope is to catch it by surprise out of the corner of your eye'"
-- Douglas Adams, Life, the Universe and Everything, (1982).
